Tomochichi Federal Courthouse Annex
This modern courthouse building set in Savannah’s National Historic Landmark District, the largest in the United States. Set among the cobblestone streets, manicured gardens, and spanish moss covered ancient live oak trees. The annex is located on a civic trust lot, designated for public use by the 1733 Oglethorpe Plan of Savannah. The $27 million dollar building designed by Page Architects and Hoar Construction provides modern work spaces for courthouse employees while respecting the community’s interest in preserving Savannah’s historical charm.
The design process included working with local architectural historians to re-use the site’s existing 1800s-era asphalt pavers and granite curbs. Storm water is directed towards rain gardens where and the long term success of street trees is assured with silva cell suspended concrete systems. Robust site security landscape systems that meet GSA standards and U.S. Marshall Service standards are integrated throughout the streetscape. The project earned a LEED Gold and Sites Silver certification.
